This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

What I love most about my students is their resilience. They are amazing high schoolers who show up to learn every day despite challenges that would stop many adults. As a Title I school, many face economic hardships, but they bring determination, curiosity, and a willingness to grow that inspires me daily.

The right books and tools can open doors my students never thought possible.

Diverse novels, engaging graphic novels, and Spanish-language books will help every student find a story that speaks to them, whether it’s seeing themselves reflected in the pages or discovering a new perspective. High-interest books will hook even the most reluctant readers, while journals will give them space to track their growth, deepen their understanding of skills and standards, and express themselves. Pencils, colored pencils, and a sharpener will allow students to annotate, illustrate, and connect creatively with their reading.

My goal is to build an independent reading program where every student can choose books they love, read at their own pace, and respond in meaningful, creative ways. With these essentials, my students will not only strengthen their literacy skills, they will also discover that reading can be a joy, a refuge, and a source of empowerment.
