Journalists Need Notebooks

My students need 60 reporter's notebooks. These narrow books are what real journalists use, not wide composition books used in English class. They facilitate note-taking.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Today journalism class started with a breaking news story. An assistant principal had pulled the plug on the sound system at lunch because an event had gotten rowdy. Although the paper doesn't publish until next month, we went into reporting mode and published a story, photo and video on the website

My high school students are the best.

They take a full load of academic classes and still find time to work on the school newspaper as an elective. They are working-class students in a city full of rich people. Their parents are the laborers who support those with lavish lifestyles. They have big dreams, but they appreciate what they have been given. My challenge is to convince them that they do have a voice, that they can change the world, starting with their own school. Through the newspaper, they are starting to see the possibilities. After working on a breaking news story on a Friday afternoon, one girl said, "Wow. That felt like an episode of (HBO's) The Newsroom."

My Project

Sometimes it's the little things that matter most. Every time my students leave the classroom, I ask, "Do you have your notebook?" Otherwise they would write on a single sheet of notepaper, which is not very professional. Still, I have had to provide them with standard English composition books, which is not what real journalists use. They are too wide to hold easily in one hand while interviewing someone. The narrow reporter's notebooks will help them take notes on the fly, as a lot of interviews take place in hallways and such. That way they can focus on the questions they are asking and the answers they receive, rather than on balancing a notebook in the air.

By making students feel like real reporters, they will take themselves and their work more seriously.

I currently have two students at state college majoring in journalism. I would like to see many more. I would also like my students to take part in writing competitions, or "write-offs." Once they see themselves as real journalists, they will be more inclined to do so.
