Journalism Needs a Jump-Start From Chevron Fuel Your School!
My students need an iMac desktop computer with Microsoft Office; wireless mice and flash drives; a computer desk and chair; a bookshelf; and basic classroom supplies.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Exciting things are happening at our school! We now have a class set of netbooks to share and a new journalism elective for students to take. What we don't have are the support items needed to produce a quality student newspaper and web site.
My students come from a tough urban environment in Northern California.
They are Bulldogs in name as well as spirit: They may experience adversity, but they will triumph over it. More than 70% of them qualify as socioeconomically disadvantaged. They are so-called "minority" students: Latino, African-American, Filipino, Asian, and Pacific Islander. Almost half are English language learners. Unlike their wealthier peers in nearby districts, many of them do not have computers, laptops, and printers at home. That's why it's so important that they have the opportunity to use technology at school.
My Project
The computer and software will allow students to create a new Bulldog newspaper and web site. We haven't had a school newspaper in many years. Reporting, writing, layout, and web design would be difficult to accomplish without a computer, software, and flash drives. The wireless mice will make it easier for students to use the netbooks and will support writing, research, and online fact-checking when necessary. The chair and computer desk are necessary to create a space where our editorial staff can meet, plan, and produce our newspaper and web site. These tools will give students the flexibility and mobility to meet together and take ownership of the newspaper. The markers, colored pencils, and scissors are just basic supplies that our classroom lacks. Last but not least, our current bookshelf is broken and needs to be replaced.
Our new journalism elective is an exciting opportunity for student reporters, writers, editors, and designers, but it will be sadly underwhelming if students don't have the tools they need.
This computer, desk, chair, flash drives, software, and supplies will give students exactly what they need to create an outstanding school newspaper and web site!
