My eager and able students are 3 - 5 years old. They happen to contend with a variety of disabilities, including but not limited to autism, developmental delays and sensory processing dysfunction. My classroom is part of a public elementary school located in an ethnically diverse, lower income neighborhood. In collaboration with our school’s exceptional administration and support staff, my students are part of an inclusive and progressive learning environment that strives to provide the best education possible with the limited material resources that are available.
My Project
My preschoolers love to write! No, they’re not writing stories, poems, or reports yet but they are communicating on paper – each at his own unique and wonderful developmental level. Students like to learn about journaling and how to take good care of their journals by having a proper place for easy access to store them away. These journals document their daily experiences in school and eventually go home with them at the end of the school year for the parents to engage with.
Journaling is a productive and fun way for children to acquire and practice writing skills while they discover how to express themselves creatively as individuals.
Each school day I encourage the children to journal about experiences that they’ve had either at school or at home. They can journal about themselves, their family, friends, likes and dislikes, a story or movie or even their favorite color. Literally anything that intrigues their curiosity and imagination As their first attempt at journalism, their notes may take the form of drawing pictures or other visual symbols as they discover the power of letters and words. The children love to share their journals and describe their entries as they “tell their own story.”
