This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The students in my journalism class show a great deal of initiative and truly want to find ways to aid our society. Many have faced a multitude of obstacles in their lives but remain resolute in graduating, going to college, and truly living the American dream. My students are from Corona, Queens, the epicenter of the COVID crisis and many have lost loved ones, or have faced grave financial struggles.
My students see journalism as an avenue to a better society and expose that which harms our collective human spirit.
We are a largely immigrant school, and many of my students arrived from nations where the concept of an independent press was/is foreign.
My students are passionate about reporting the news and writing editorials that can motivate and advocate for change. They are angered by the attack on the field of journalism and the false use of the term "fake news" when it is attached to reputable news agencies.
My Project
My 34 journalism students have made me so proud this last year, and can always be seen walking around out school with their reporter notebooks, taking copious notes on everything they see. They have learned that the written word is very powerful.
I want the students to continue with their writing and these journals will allow them to have their goals and dreams written in front of them as they embark on the new adventure of college.
They can reflect on their choices, and have a clear written plan of action which they can continue to craft as they face the rigors that await them in college.
