In our school writing is emphasized across the curriculum. I want my students to be creative in art class with the art materials, but I want them to realize that writing is also a part of the creative process. In art we keep a journal. Sometimes we write about the creative processes we use in our projects. Sometimes we write about how the art makes us feel, and sometimes we write about different artists. I would really like for my students to see the connection of creating with art processes and their writing. I thought that the students could see this by making their own journals that they write in each week. I usually require my 4th and 5th grade students to bring a spiral notebook to serve as their journals at the beginning of the year. Of course there are some students who never bring theirs and never want to write. They don't see why they have to write in an art class. If they made their own journal, maybe they could identify their own creative work and this would encourage them to write in the journals. Then they would not only have a record of their creative art processes in the art projects they create, but they would have a record of some of the things they learned about art and artists in their journal. I want them to see that writing is not just for English class, but is an important part of all their studies - even in art. The students will drill holes in the paper and bind them with chip board covers. They can use a variety of material to decorate their journals. This will help them identy with the journal and realize that the writing they do inside is important in the creative process.
