Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are fun-loving, smart, and hardworking! Our students come from all across the city to participate in the unique ELL (English Language Learner) New Arrivals Program, and ASD program, both specific for grades 6-8.
My students come from all different backgrounds to create a positive learning environment, where they will be encouraged to brainstorm, collaborate, and create works of art.
It is truly a unique urban setting.
Students at our middle school take an art class for an entire school year as a required elective and specials class and range in different skill levels and abilities.
My Project
This year our school is bringing back our Advisory program, which serves all of our students. Twice a week, we meet with a small group of students and discuss/participate in different activities relating to topics and themes. One of the activities I would like to have my advisory group do is Journaling.
Journaling is a great way to reflect upon one's thoughts, goal setting, and a creative outlet.
I hope by using these journals, it will help my students find an outlet for self-expression where they can communicate their feelings and incorporate artwork and creativity. I am hoping that my students will be able to use these markers, scrapbook papers and washi tape to express their creativity in their new journals.
Journaling is a great way for self-reflection, planning and relates to Social-Emotional learning which is one of our focuses for this school year. I plan to use the journaling supplies with my students to incorporate restorative justice methods, which is a new focus for this year.
