Our middle school students come from a diverse background with almost 600 children on campus from over a forty-five minute drive away to neighborhoods around the school. Our students a working hard at overcoming the academic deficits left by COVID and have been impacted in many ways.
We know that across our state students have been dramatically affected by the emotional impacts of COVID .
Many students stayed home alone or with younger siblings while parents worked or they experienced dramatic changes as some parents lost jobs. Upon return in fall of 2020, to a hybrid instruction, students' social and emotional state was impacted as they came to school only every other day so they spent time struggling with school work while at home with limited support, only by a computer screen. As we reopen fully to students in 2021, we find dysregulated students who require more time, support, and materials to be able to learn in the classroom. This is difficult with classrooms of 25-32 students and teachers and staff are doing their best to meet the needs of students.
My Project
These journaling resources will promote writing standards for English Language Arts and allow students to be be able to express themselves as they find ways to deal with the stress, emotions, self-esteem, and confidence since Covid changing the structure of our educational system and needs. Journaling allows students to clarify their feelings and thoughts in a way that organizes their thinking and helps with problem solving. Journaling is also covers the 7th grade writing standard W.7.10 which is: Write routinely over extended time frames (time
for research, reflection, and revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of discipline-specific tasks, purposes, and audiences.
