This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from over 25 countries and speak nearly as many languages. They are all English Language Learners (ELLs) who have come to the United States seeking new opportunities. They come with the hope that education will allow them to meet their full potential.
In addition to the monumental task of learning a new language, they must do so while meeting the same high school requirements as native English speakers.
They are an amazing group, but our district cannot always give us the resources to match our ambitions. Science and engineering are democratizing disciplines, because they engage students of all types--writers, mathematicians, builders, artists. When these students get together to collaborate on a problem, the sky is the limit.
This year I started our school's first-ever robotics course. While we have been fortunate to receive several robotics kits from DonorsChoose in the past year, I am quickly discovering that we do not have enough kits to keep up with demand. More kits will allow more students to participate both in the course and in my after-school science challenge club.
My Project
There is no better way to get kids excited to learn science than to give them problems to solve that are hands-on and open-ended. What can be more creative than building and programming your own robot? A robotics kit with easy-to-learn software will give us two opportunities: a chance to flex our creativity and learn another language--computer code. Along the way, it gives us a chance to work collaboratively and practice speaking with one another in English. My hope is that this can be a springboard for students of all academic levels to explore more opportunities in the STEM fields: science, engineering, math, and technology.
Please help me unleash my students' creativity while they have fun with science and engineering.
They have come to the United States to learn and make themselves the best they can be. Your act of kindness and generosity will help shape their future.
