My Students

As a beginning teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am looking to provide a creative and safe environment for my students.

My students are eager, energetic learners with big emotions!

They like to move, read and love lots and LOTS of positive attention. Many of my students are not able to experience a "typical" home life due to their situations. From the minute they walk in, I focus on their potential and providing an environment that allows them to learn more than just what the curriculum tells me to teach. Many of my students are still learning how to handle their big emotions so we spend a lot of time learning coping strategies. I may not be able to control their home lives but I can certainly control their experience in our classroom. By doing this in a creative and positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic growth.

My Project

A sense of classroom community is super essential in our first grade classroom! While we spend a good chunk of time enhancing our reading and math skills at the carpet through student read alouds, math talk, calendar time, etc., we also gain important social and emotional skills.

Having a classroom rug will create a special space for students to discover, community build and share their ideas!

We would like to have a color-block classroom rug in order to define our own spaces during carpet time! This would also allow for easier transitions to and from carpet time throughout the day.
