My Students

This year I will have 25 active, enthusiastic second graders in my classroom. In this dual immersion class, everyone is a second language learner, working towards becoming bilingual, biliterate and bicultural in both Spanish and English. The students have been together since kindergarten and have already built a strong community, supporting each other as they take risks to learn and grow. They are creative, inquisitive, playful and hard-working!

Second grade is a year when students amaze themselves by reading and writing for longer and longer periods of time, and at more sophisticated levels.

Students love discovering new authors, identifying the writing strategies used to make their favorite books so enjoyable, and then trying out these techniques themselves. They are so proud of themselves every time they set a goal, and then surpass it!

My Project

In second grade, students dramatically increase the number of words and pages that they write. Writing workshop is a special time of day, when students not only exercise their independence in selecting their own writing topics, they also get to choose their "perfect" spots for writing. Students spread out across the classroom, looking for quiet places to do their planning, writing, revision and editing. Students love to grab a clipboard to take to a cozy corner or for sprawling out on the rug and writing. Wobble cushions on a chair or the carpet are what is needed to help other students focus and be their best creative selves.

New felt-tips pens, colorful clipboards, and all the other writing materials help students feel the importance of the work they are doing.

The dry erase markers allow students to practice spelling and punctuation in a low-risk setting. Red pens encourage students to edit their final work. And the sharpies? Well, those are for making beautiful artwork to accompany their amazing writing!

The second grade writing "explosion" is truly something to behold. Students are so proud of themselves when they take their work all the way through the writing process to publication. These new materials will help my students feel like professional authors! Thank you for supporting their efforts!
