Our project is to create an art supply closet for our school, stocked with plenty of all the basic art materials needed in an elementary school, starting with multi-colored construction paper. That construction paper will become elaborate masks for class plays, US symbols of liberty, covers for books published by student authors and shared at our all-school writing celebrations, heart-felt and hand-written thank you cards for volunteers, pop-up books about penguins, maps of the Oregon Trail, ladybug life cycle wheels, 3-dimensional models of our neighborhood, scientific illustrations of plants. It will provide a background and frame for student self-portraits, art in the style of Van Gogh, Kandinsky, Gaudí, Picasso, oil pastel and watercolor drawings, paper sculpting techniques. Student engagement in learning will soar, as they have the necessary materials to express themselves in new and creative ways. The high-quality paper we are requesting will support younger students in developing their fine motor skills and creativity without the frustration of paper that tears easily. The fade-resistant paper means their projects will retain their beauty over time, encouraging the students to put forth their best effort. One of the things I’m most excited about is to see our hallways transform. Because this construction paper will be for the entire school, all teachers will have access to it and student work will be on display! Our hallways will be decorated with all of the art extensions and community building activities that will be possible with this construction paper.
