Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from extremely diverse backgrounds. There are students who have fled war-torn countries such as the Ukraine, Russia and Israel to first generation Mexican-Americans, to students dealing with Asperger's, a myriad of learning disabilities and students who may also be in advanced stages of disease.
Through all their struggles and anxiety, they are extremely resilient and come to school every day with hopes of a better future.
Many are new to reading. Often they'll tell me they haven't read a complete book since they were in elementary school.
My Project
My students are reading Jeff Zentner's book in class and discussing the themes of the book. Not only will meeting the author add to their understanding of the work of literature, but it will also allow them to speak to an acclaimed author and learn about the craft writing. Many of my students in this class are aspiring authors and would welcome someone who they see as a mentor and role model. During this virtual visit, they will also learn about how a novelist goes from the earliest stages of a work to becoming a published author.
