This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

You would be inspired by the dedication my students have to playing music. Whether it's marching in 100 degree (plus) weather or playing an outdoor jazz concert with the local junior high school, these kids are dedicated. Last year, all three jazz bands qualified and competed at state, with the top ensemble earning the highest rating given.

The band students love music and live for it.

We have a dedicated parent booster group with that supports the band at every football game and competition. Students have younger siblings that plan to join. The families are invested both financially and as volunteers. The percentage of kids that learn a new instrument for a different group is unbelievable, they are committed to music.

My Project

The exhilarating feeling of a live performance is what drives many music students. Preparing for an audience and daily practice makes the end product worthwhile. Every year we work toward an end goal, a challenge for all music students to aim for.

For a high school jazz band, what could be better than a visit to the heart of the music, New Orleans?

There are about sixty jazz students on the campus. Jazz is music without the rules, where young musicians can learn to improvise and express themselves. It's about always improving, and a lifelong love for the music. While on tour, students will work with a local jazz clinician and receive feedback. They will attend a private concert and perform at a downtown venue. When students encounter other musicians performing in the streets, they can only get better. It would be a journey that they would not forget. This project would help us chip away at the cost.
