My Students
My students are hardworking and passionate art and science students. They come to class everyday eager to learn and create. My students go to a title I school and many are on free and reduce lunch. My students live in a neighborhood where housing has become ridiculously expansive. Just this year, enrollment decreased by 67 students because students have had to transfer to counties like Concord or Hayward due to increasing rent here in Daly City.
It's difficult to build school community and positive climate when there is a constant exodus of students and families in our neighborhood.
However, I hope to make the most of my students' middle school years by creating an fun, interactive, and engaging science curriculum! They will plan out ideas, build things, make mistakes, and -finally- learn and grow from these experiences. We will learn the art of continuously improving through our failures, that is the art of science.
My Project
This year, I teach science and art to over 100 students. The bulb on my old document camera burned out last year and haven't been replaced since. Because of that, I've been missing out on featuring students' work, showing demos, and giving students more dimensions to this great topic!
Having a document camera in the classroom will make teaching and presentation more exciting, allowing me to easily project and feature student work in front of the class.
I am also requesting a low-priced DVD player for my classroom. This is because the new generation of iMacs, which I use to project my powerpoint, do not have CD/DVD drives. It would be awesome to be able to show relevant episodes or clips from series like Cosmos or Bill Nye to further enrich my students' science education.
With these two devices in my utility --and two very long HDMI cables -- I hope to improve my instruction and relay my love of science to my students!
