My students' abilities range from slightly delayed to severely delayed. This year, I am adding 10 typically developing children to my class for a total of 18 students! I also service students with an Autism diagnosis.
My school is a Pre-kindergarten through fifth grade school and is very diverse.
Some students receive special education services including occupational, physical, and speech therapy as well as Title I pull-out services for extra help with reading and math. We also have a dental clinic within the school where the children can get their teeth cleaned and be seen by a dentist.
The school offers an after-school program where the students receive help with their homework, can participate in activities (like going to the symphony) and sit down for dinner with their friends. At the after-school program, children can also attend counseling groups as well. Counseling is also offered throughout the school day with our school counselor and our community counseling partners. All students also qualify for free meals.
My Project
For years, I have used a CD player and CDs to display my classroom music. These materials were also present in our music center for the students to utilize. Our CD player is on its “last leg” so while brainstorming about what we can upgrade to next with my students, one of the children suggested an iPod.
I told this particular student that I would see what I could do!
My students love music and especially love playing to music during choice time (play time). They also enjoy controlling what songs are playing. This addition to the classroom will also help to modernize the classroom as well!
