My 5th grade students are amazing inner city kids whose families struggle in a concrete jungle, yet strive to learn as much as they can.
I have an incredible group of students who are creative and eager to learn despite the inner city woes that plague the neighborhood.
Many of my students are recent immigrants who are working hard to master the English language. They have so many questions about their world and are eager to discover its mysteries. They are trying to make sense of the world around them.
Any book can be used to teach students how to read, but "Jackie and Me" can teach so much more. "Jackie and Me" will take my students on a civil rights adventure into a world where Jim Crow laws, civil injustice, and the color of your skin make a difference in your world. In this unit of study, students will explore the Bill of Rights and civil rights. They will get a better understanding of what is was like by following the main character Joe, who gets to meet Jackie Robinson.
We will also communicate with the author, Dan Gutman, "Jackie and Me" on why he chose to write this type of historical fiction.
I've taught this book for the last 6 years and every year my students love reading about Jackie Robinson.
