My students need materials (soil, cups, trowels) to do a science project. The digital camera will be used so that the students can take pictures of how their plant is growing.
How many students have the opportunity and resources to plant a bean, flower or vegetable in school or at home? My students haven't.
My students age range is from 6 to 8 years old.
Some have repeated first grade already. My class is 100% African American. I have 8 girls and 5 boys. My students mean the world to me. As a first year teacher, they have taught me so many things about myself and life. I teach at a school in a very poor socioeconomic status community. Last year the school was given a grade "D." I have some students that have been homeless, hungry, abused, and lived in shelters or out of a motel. Majority of my class in the beginning couldn't read and were faced with survival challenges day by day. With all the challenges my students and I faced we were still able to succeed and thrive to be the best we can be. My students do not need pity because of the love they receive for me, other teachers, and administrators. We do as much as we can for them. We have given clothes to students that need it. Even food to have over the weekend. My students know they can count on me.
My Project
The planting kit and camera will give my students an opportunity to do something they probably will never be able to do as a child. They will do a science project on planting a bean and/or flower. I believe that planting a garden or even growing a plant in a cup will show my students something they have yet to experience. It will show them responsibility. This science project will be a fun physical activity and at the same time my students will be learning. This project will teach my students about nature and agriculture. It will also teach them math because students will measure their plant day by day and record their observation. I would love to eventually expand this project throughout the school and have a garden full of vegetables, plants and flowers that the students, teachers, and administrators help grow. I would love to get parental involvement and make this very important to our community.
This science project is just the beginning to a bigger garden in the future.
The support of this project will touch the lives of many students. This is something they will remember and tell stories about for the rest of their lives. I want to show them a bright side to life. I want this bean plant to represent them. With enough care, love, food, and shelter, the bean will grow tall and healthy. This is all my students also need to become successful in school and in real life.
