This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I have a group of newcomer students, from various Spanish speaking countries. Each one has a story that will break your heart. And each one is so hungry to learn. The challenge is that not only is learning a new language a struggle, but they were never fully supported academically in their native language. As a bilingual interventionist I work with students to determine if their area of difficulty is due to language or comprehension. But when students don't currently have books to read in Spanish-that are appropriate-it's impossible to determine. One student in particular has suffered such trauma but when she reads her eyes light up and she smiles. The attention that she receives and joy she emits when reading is contagious and there's nothing more I'd like to be able to do than provide her-and all my students-with books to take home to read.
