"I've Got the Whole World in My Hands..." seems like such an exaggerated phrase. However, at Kahalu'u Elementary, we want our students to be able to become global citizens and well rounded college and career ready when they leave and venture on to new educational opportunities.
The majority of our students come from low-income families and are on free or reduced lunch.
Despite their economic hardships, our students come to school excited and with a passion to learn. They are eager to learn about the world in every aspect. Our school is committed to providing students and their families with a safe learning environment in which children can thrive and meet their highest potential. We consistently provide family enrichment programs that teach our children and the community about the environment, history, and science. In addition, our school staff works hard to provide additional tutoring services at no charge for students struggling in Language Arts and Math after school and during extended school breaks. We are a small school community with extremely large hearts and strive to provide each student with the best educational opportunities in order for them to reach their highest potential. We believe every student can succeed at whatever they pursue.
My Project
I am requesting one additional laptop for use in the every day general education classroom. Most of our students have never been outside of Kahalu'u and experienced what the world has to offer. With more technology in the classroom, the students will have the world at their fingertips. They can use Google Maps to travel across the seas and visit Europe, Asia, Africa and countless other places. They will have the ability to collaborate on projects and publish their writing. With the additional computer in the classroom, my students will be able to knock down the geographic barrier that separates them from being able to unlock and access limitless knowledge.
They are currently learning about world religions and most of them have little to no experience of religion other than their own. With computers and the Internet, my students will be able to research the historical roots of various religions and publish their work to share with their family, friends, and the community.
Supporting this project will provide my students with the ability to access and unlock endless amounts of knowledge that they crave for.
They have such inquiring minds that I would love to see them use their creativity and publish their work in any way possible. I want them to be able to experience and appreciate all the world has to offer them.
More than half of students from low‑income households
