The state of Michigan is going through many tough times with unemployment and cut backs in education. Our school will have full classes which means there will have to be a split class. I was chosen to teach a 3/4 split. (14 students from each grade) I would like to find interesting books to integrate the language arts and social studies curriculum.

Our state has adapted a new curriculum for both 3rd and 4th grade students. This means new materials are needed for both. A great deal of my summer has been spent researching books to go with the curriculum. I have been to the public library, school library, and several book stores and feel the books I am requesting fit the needs of my students. They are exciting stories with a great deal of historical and geographic information. I don't want to let a new curriculum at both grade levels be an obstacle for the students. They need grade appropriate materials.

I plan on integrating historical fiction in literature groups. The requested materials also will be an excellent resource for writing, geography, research topics and enrichment activities. I feel students enjoy school when their subjects are connected. The titles I have chosen are exciting and hopefully will encourage students to enjoy historical fiction and improve their writing and reading skills. Donating to my class will help students in our entire school. Our state has a very high unemployment rate and many of our students are feeling the hardship. I will share all materials with the other third and forth grade classes so all students will experience these exciting stories. It's wonderful to have a resource to go to that can help so many students enjoy new and exciting literature.
