Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I am a second grade ESL, (English Second Language), GT, and general education teacher. I teach in a rural area. Our school has a low socio-economic level as well.

As a class project, we have an edublog. Currently I am only able to include audio and still pictures of my students. With the ease of the Flip camcorder, I could also include video without having to purchase extra software for my computer. Communication with parents is very important to student success in the classroom. It has been a goal of mine to connect better with parents who do not frequently come to parent conferences or school functions. Sometimes it is because of language barriers and for others it's difficult to determine. Either way, I want to provide a way to bring myself and my classroom to them, even if they are not willing or able to bring themselves to me. My hope is that this would provide better communication and a better understanding of my desires and goals for their child.

Having a Flip video recorder would allow for more student independence in creating webcasts for our edublog. This will greatly enhance the experience for students and parents who have access to view the blog. In meeting my goal for better parent communication, I have decided to create a DVD introducing myself, my classroom, and my expectations through video. The DVD would be handed out to each child in my classroom the first day of school. This will allow parents to put a face with my name and hopefully feel like they know me a little before they actually meet me. I will also include Spanish subtitles in order to reach those parents who are not bilingual.

Technology is an important part of learning in today's classroom. Your help will ensure that my students will be provided rich opportunities to express themselves and the things they have been learning in a variety of technologically advanced ways. Your help will also provide the parents of my students every opportunity to know me and my expectations. Please help me give my students rich technological experiences at the same time, helping me to make sure that no parent is left behind.
