Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Remember those days when you would daydream about what your life would be like in the future and where the world would take you?
Our class is comprised of 25 boys and girls.
There are 6 English Language Learners and one student with an individualized educational plan. My students are very well behaved, and they love to borrow books. They come from poverty-stricken homes where some of them are required to be the adults of the family. Their school is one of the oldest schools in NYC, with no real gym and no elevator (four flights high).
My Project
In order to expose my students to real world issues, they will need child-friendly materials that present these issues in ways that keep students interested and protected. We hope to use scholastic magazines to assist in dissecting informational text that will later enable them to gain the strategies and skills they will need to excel on the NY state exams. We plan to read and respond to articles within the magazines, allowing students to develop and present valid arguments based on evidence from the informational text.
It is so important that children come to understand the depths of this world.
These students need to be prepared for the world they will be entering after school, the world that lives beyond their school, beyond NY, even beyond the U.S. They are the future doctors, teachers, and lawyers, each needing to develop experience in real-world problems.
