My students need headphones to hear educational programs on separate computers, as well as a set of speakers to hear tutorials from my computer as a whole class.
Many of our learners do not have the opportunity to practice reading at home. They either lack having some, if any, books, or interactive computer programs that support the necessary time to build their confidence in their reading skills.
This is a wonderful group of kindergarten children in 1 of the 5 all-day kindergarten classes at our school!
They are respectful and have taken it upon themselves to clap for one another for various successes. 85% of the children at our school live in poverty. Our students also come from diverse cultural backgrounds, with English not being the first language for many.
My Project
My students need headphones to hear educational programs on separate computers, as well as a set of speakers to hear tutorials from my computer as a whole class. Students will be able to have individual time mastering letter sounds they learn in class by using interactive computer programs that encourage the love of reading. Currently, the audible dialog from the separate computers gets distracting, making it hard for each reader to focus on their own pace. Some children are still learning letter sounds while others are ready to blend sounds and read whole words. With headphones for each computer, learners will be able to concentrate on their individual level of reading. In addition, from my computer, I am able to project onto a screen vignettes and animated characters which model blending letter sounds. This helps make connections for early readers. The speakers we have are not loud enough, making the technology we do have rather ineffective.
Many of our children simply do not have access to the various forms of technology that expand their reading skills.
I want to be able to provide these resources for them. There is endless research to show how technology plays an enormous role in bringing to life the skills children work so hard to gain.
