This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever seen a student who is unmotivated to read? It's truly painful watching them struggle to stay on task. It's even harder when they do not fall in love with their book. If they had ownership of their time then they will be able to become readers who fall into a book unable to escape.
My students are literally hungry for motivation.
Some have raging anxiety that results in outbursts while other break into tears. They feel like they have no control and struggle to use their words to express themselves. This results in them being often misunderstood and left to sink or swim! I teach in a school where teachers are pulling their hair out to figure out how to help our kids become readers who just love to read. I often tell myself, I wish I could find that one book that would turn on the switch for them. I want my students to soar beyond my expectations. I would give anything to see them build a reading life with the same passion they have built a technological life. My students thirst for motivation and knowledge without reading they will remain trapped never knowing what it's like to escape into a book.
My Project
After doing much research, I stumbled upon a website that offered a solution called bookmark timers. They were timers on a bookmark to help students time themselves independently. I felt like maybe if they had ownership of their time then they may feel like they are independent readers. They will learn to create and monitor their goals. This will become a stepping stone toward self-reflection, decision making, and goal setting. They will feel a sense of confidence and accomplishment while enhancing their fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary. These timers will be their key in becoming focused and will help them to develop a sense of pride. Being able to monitor their time on task, will result in students become efficient readers who can relate, communicate, and express themselves with grade level vocabulary.
Ultimately, these timers will shape their minds to think beyond the video games they play and to actually realize the true value of reading.
My children need to read, so that they can compete with the rest of the word. Giving them these timers will be their ticket to better tomorrows. It will shape their paths toward success and close the achievement gap. Please help give them timers because someone once believed in you and gave you the opportunity to succeed.
