My Students

Current events are complicated and understanding our world is such a challenge. Imagine fifth graders trying to comprehend our world and events when even the adults are confounded. Enter Time For Kids for fifth and sixth grade students. This publication makes sense of our world for students.

I teach fifth grade students in a New York City public school.

We live in the borough of Queens and from the published demographics, we are one of the most diverse areas in the nation. Our schools serves an international community and the diversity of our students brings so much to learning. We have a global perspective with many languages and cultures well represented. For that reason the expectations are high and our parents look to us to offer the best learning environment, including the need to provide excellent resources. Many of our families have sacrificed much to come to this country and the children of our families are highly motivated to achieve to ensure their future success. What the children learn in school is what they share with families at home, and so it is important to bring the best publications to our classroom.

My Project

Time For Kids is a news publication featuring international and national stories that engage students. This particular magazine is geared to fifth and sixth grade students covering stories in a way that is accessible while challenging. Because this is a magazine subscription, the material is always current, interesting, and addresses learning standards for which students are accountable. Every edition offers something new. Students always look forward to the next edition, and the many activities and online support for this magazine make this a truly multimedia experience. The resources give students many different ways to respond to the stories which allow teachers to differentiate instruction in a meaningful way.

Time For Kids keeps up with the times and gives us relevant stories, quality coverage, engaging activities, and a global lens through which we can view the world.

It is so important to motivate students by giving them quality reading that is relevant to their lives. This magazine makes the stories accessible with thought provoking interviews and a decidedly young reportage. I hope we can offer this magazine subscription to my students to bolster their learning.
