It's the Little Things!

My students need high quality supplies to produce high quality work. In this low income area, the burden on families to purchase the needed supplies can be crippling.

My Students

A student misses seven days of class when his/her father dies of a drug overdose. Another visits with the school counselor to develop emotional strategies to deal with his/her turmoil of a father in jail. A Special Ed student doesn't get enrolled in after school tutoring because the parent doesn't provide the necessary signatures. The students in my class face these kind of harsh realities of life. Despite the chaos of their home lives, the classroom provides them encouragement, stability, and crucial skills.

Bridging the achievement gap of minority and low income students is crucial if we want them to grow to be contributing members of society.

Over 51 percent of students in our school receive free or reduced meals and a third of them are native Spanish speakers. These are my students and they desire to build a better life for themselves.

Maintaining adequate classrooms resources is a huge burden on low income families. The more materials and supplies they have access to the more vibrant and rich the educational experiences. I regularly need to send home pencils so my students can complete daily homework, and even more for special projects.

My Project

When educators create a productive and safe classrooms, students benefit I want the best for my students so they can reach their potential. Poverty robs students of the everyday background experiences that secure families provide. My room must be a haven and experience center that motivates and inspires.

Giving children access to the "little things" like reliable mechanical pencils and pencils boxes teaches more than just organizational skills; it sends the message that the student is important and that education has value.

With the high turn over in my room, I am constantly depleting my supplies. Unlike other schools, these families are not asked to (and couldn't) purchase a mountain of supplies.
