My students need 10 Science supplies, including matter and animals games, a microscope, sorting and classification instant centers, a butterfly nursery and life science stamps.
Think back to a time when we attended first grade! How did we develop our scientific thinking skills? I can remember having a microscope, models of habitats, hands-on materials for discoveries and inquiries. I remember learning science in a science lab!
My 6 year-old students live and learn in the Bronx, with little chances to explore environments and form their scientific thinking skills. There is no science lab in our school that my students can use. I teach in a Bronx public school, where all my students receive free breakfast and lunch because of the high poverty percentage. They don’t get to experience trips to parks and museums, unless the school provides them. Going on a trip once a month is hardly enough, and paper and pencil activities are definitely not the way to awaken the interest of our country’s future scientific minds.
What child would not be jumping with excitement to see a caterpillar metamorphose into a butterfly? What 6-year old would not love to discover the minuscule molecules and cells of living things through using a microscope for the first time in their public school class? Let’s give our country’s future a different kind of game; games where they have to think strategically, and apply scientific skills and knowledge to solve them; games about matter and animals, sorting and classifying, that will help them succeed stress-free state exams in later grades.
Most of us are tired of seeing our children waste their time playing video games. We’ve had just about enough of watching them posted in front of the TV for countless hours. I hope that with your generous help and support, I can get my students interested in higher thinking science games. I hope that they will ask their parents for a board game “just like we played in class” instead of a video game next time they’re shopping. Only You can make it possible through your donation to this project to make my students thrilled about science!
