This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Nestled in a neighborhood on the south side of Phoenix, is a kindergarten through eighth grade school bustling with 550 brand new students. It didn't take long for the art room to become "the place to be" on campus. The students are experiencing art in a way they never have before. They are being taught "Artistic Behavior." Students buzz with excitement on "Art" day because they know when they cross the art studio threshold that will they become self-directed, independent thinkers that create "wow" worthy art! They are the artists and this is their studio!

My students do not have art supplies or technology at home, so their exposure to art and technology relies solely on their experiences at school.

Our students are immigrants and English Language Learners. We are a Title I school in one of the most socioeconomically disadvantaged areas of Phoenix, AZ.

But don't let that fool you! Our K-8 Mustangs are spirited, resilient children that arrive to school eager to learn and create, every single day!

My Project

At my school, students pick their elective. Most electives are year-long, except Art & Physical Education. So at the start of the second semester, I get all of the PE kids... Well, this year's group is not the biggest fan of art, and I don't blame them! Traditional art and teacher-directed content isn't relevant to their lives! But I need the opportunity and materials to show them what art could mean to them.

Art shouldn't be all about drawing!

I want to expose these kids to different art worlds. I want to win them over and make them love art and the possibilities that art provides. I want to build their confidence through their ideas and creativity. Just because you cannot realistically render doesn't mean that you are "bad" at art! Art transcends through hobbies, daily design choices, various careers, problem-solving and creative thought. Everyone is an artist in their own way. The trick is to harness that creative potential and use it to your advantage!

My students are all about fashion, but lack the financial resources to purchase the clothes that they want. If we had the tools necessary to create a custom t-shirt shop, I know that they would spend hours designing shirts that they would be proud to wear.
