Help me give my students an air conditioner, so they can focus on their learning instead of the heat. We also need books that reflect the students' diversity with pencils in skin tones to create art.
I teach a fabulous group of first graders, who are inspiring, motivating, and fun to teach. They are the future readers, writers, mathematicians, computer analysts, engineers, artists, and musicians of the world.
I teach in a large, diverse, K-8, high poverty school, in an urban area of a large city in Pennsylvania that experiences crime.
Our school receives Title I funding, and the entire school is eligible for free breakfast and lunch. The students who come to school eager to learn are from various living situations such as single parents, foster homes, homeless shelters, or extended family living. My students have a variety of learning abilities and disabilities including Special Education, ADD, ADHD, vision impairment and English as a Second Language. I am dedicated to meeting their needs daily, along with building their self-esteem and confidence.
My Project
Our students need to see themselves in their learning for science, math, technology and even literacy. We are requesting these special books to build our community as we start the new year. The pencils will be used as literacy/ art responses to what we learn. Another working air conditioner would change the learning atmosphere in my classroom. Our room gets incredibly hot and we are unable to open the windows very far most of the time because of insects and the metal gates. Spring, summer, and even fall can be very warm in Philadelphia, especially with the windows closed and over 30 people in a room.
Many of my students suffer from asthma and other ailments that are aggravated in the heat; having an air conditioner would help keep my students focused and healthy at the same time.
It would be such a blessing to have my students learn in a cool and comfortable classroom. Half of our crowded classroom gets cool, but the other half is still very hot. Therefore, the children argue about where their desks are and where their small groups meet. Getting a second working air conditioner would alleviate those tensions. This would be a "cool" way to start the new year of learning.
