This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Students in urban schools are at a distinct disadvantage and fall academically due to the achievement gap. This is a result of the lack of adequate resources in the classroom and environment in which they live. My kindergarten students come from diverse backgrounds. Their lives have uncertainty and unpredictability outside of school. Due to these circumstances, many of them have no access to technology, no way of doing homework, and the basic necessities for daily school life. This puts them at more of a disadvantage when it comes to their education and ability to grow academically.
My Project
My students are in need of snacks for the classroom snack time. My students come from homes that are less fortunate and their families are unable to support the classroom need for snacks. My class eats lunch at 10:35 am and by the afternoon they are extremely hungry and ask for food. Some snack foods that are needed include individually wrapped snack bags of crackers (cheese its, goldfish, applesauce, and teddy grahams), fruit snacks, and vanilla wafers.
I have some students that will leave school with all that they will eat for that day.
It is my hope that I will be able to provide snacks daily at school before the day ends to meet their hunger need.
