Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember your first experience watching performers bring a story to life in a play? Our students are second graders from a Title 1 school in a low-income area. They haven’t had the experience of attending live theater and are looking forward to creating their very first field trip memory and theater memory. Children have so many talents that they don’t always get to experience or try out. With our field trip to the Gallo Center to see Robinson Crusoe & Friday, our students will get to experience the arts for the very first time! We hope this will light a fire in them to join our school talent show at the end of our school year if it is their passion to perform. It might also inspire them to join the local children’s theater groups or drama groups to share their talents when they are in junior high and high school. There can never be too many options for our students to express their creativity!
My Project
Do you remember the first theater play you ever saw? Was it memorizing? Do you remember how you felt? This project will make it possible for 2 classes of second graders to experience those same feelings. This project will make it possible for them to attend a play at an actual theater, something not easy to come by in rural California. Not only will they experience their first play, it will be their first ever field trip.
Live theater will light a fire of creativity within many, if not all, of our students.
It will expose our students to the performing arts as well as open up the discussion about all the different roles that go into creating the masterpiece before them. For this field trip, our students will be taking a bus to Modesto to watch Robinson Crusoe & Friday at the Gallo Center of the Arts, and on our return home will have a lunch at a local pizza restaurant. This experience we hope will inspire our students to get involved in local children’s drama clubs, be inspired to delve into their passions, and expand on their abilities as writers to show their stories, not just tell them. We hope you can help us make this field trip possible for our students. Thank you!
