I have a fabulous group of free spirited first grade friends. They are goal oriented, are building independent life skills daily, and are eager to learn all they can about the world around them.
Kids love the freedom to make decisions for themselves.
That's why, in our classroom, I love to provide outlets that allow them to explore with flexible seating. I am always looking for additional ways to build their exploration and independence, that will build life skills, that they can carry on with them for the rest of their lives.
My Project
At the end of the school year we spent a couple math classes playing games in small groups. I was amazed at how many of my students didn't know how to play traditional games such as Uno.
Playing games teaches patience and courage.
It allows student to learn that you can still have fun and not come out as a winner every time. That they can be supportive of their peers and encourage one another. Play allows children to use their creativity while developing their imagination, dexterity, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strength.
The games will be used during our many days of inside recess during the cold winter and rainy spring. I will set up different game centers where students can choose an activity to do and work in small groups. This will give students more opportunities to socialize and to build respect for one another. We will also share our game library with the other first grade classrooms, as we usually have recess all together.
Please help me provide a fun and exciting game library to my classroom for years to come.
