Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach full day kindergarten in a public school on Chicago's Southside. Ninety-nine percent of our students are African American and 97% of our students are on free or reduced lunch. As a school funded by Reading First, we are excited to be receiving boxes and boxes of books this year to entice our young readers!
Unfortunately, I have nowhere to put all of these books! Along with other classroom supplies, books are raining down from my makeshift shelves (made from particle board and cinder blocks) onto my students' heads. Not only can books jammed on to homemade shelves be a dangerous situation, but also a discouraging one for budding readers. Kindergarteners need to see the pictures on the front covers, rather than the book spines, in order to be enticed by them.
I would like to create a safe and welcoming environment for my students and all the new books and materials that are coming into our classroom. This environment requires sturdy bookshelves and various storage boxes that allow book covers to be seen. When students are able to see the books and materials in a safe and organized manner, they will be more excited to use them. In effect, the classroom will foster a community of learners that love to read!
When I started the year, I had fewer books and was able to draw attention to and store them more easily. My students would see the book covers and get so excited about the pictures they saw on them. As the shelves became more crowded, their interest in the books drained. Please help them revive their excitement for books and keep my students safe by providing the bookcases to our classroom.
