I consider my students to be part of my family and they know this as soon as they are enrolled in my classes and enter my classroom.
I teach at-risk students who have given up on themselves and need to know that someone does care about them and their education.
My students have very difficult lives where they have had to fend for themselves, many are homeless while all are hungry; they are and feel alone. So they come to school angry, hungry, and/or happy to have a place to go where they can be warm and welcoming.
Their favorite place in school is my classroom where they are hardworkers. There they feel safe and loved; they even give me a hug(s) each day. This is their way of saying 'thank you for caring about me; I respect you.'
My students need to move around a lot and get distracted easily while in the classroom, thus have a difficult time concentrating. I want my classroom to be supplied with things so they can learn and I can help them learn and grow to their fullest potential.
My students need to 'move' while working on their online courses and while reading plays, novels, short stories and writing essays. Often they can't accomplish this because they are distracted by where they can go and what they can do about feeling uncomfortable and restrained. If they have the stand up desks and wobble chairs they will then be comfortable enough to really learn without any distractions and feel free to participate to their greatest potential while in the classroom.
They will be able to move around while completing their tasks without feeling restrained and uncomfortable.
