It's Not Chemistry Without Fire!

My Students

Science needs to be fun. When my students get to me in high school, much of the fun of science has been lost. Yet when they get into my class, I can see the excitement in their eyes when they ask if they get to do flame labs and see it shattered when I have to say, "No, we don't have the equipment."

Our school is small with only around 500 students.

We are located in a rural, economically depressed area. The median income in our area is only $25,000 and approximately 60% of our students are enrolled in our free and reduced lunch program. Even so, we have many students enroll in out honors and Advanced Placement science classes every year.

My Project

My students need 10 Bunsen Burners so they ability to perform some of the most basic chemistry labs by using a flame source to test emission spectra and empirical formulas. We will be using these burners to conduct a series of flame labs including, but not limited to, flame tests and empirical formula determination. Many labs can be done using alternate heat sources (hot water baths or hot plates), but these two labs in particular need a temperature that only a gas burner can provide.

I am hoping that with this small set of materials, that I can open my students eyes to some of the excitement of chemistry.

Not every lab can or should involve a burner, but there are some that cannot be done without it.
