My Students

When I look at my students, I see a rainbow. Located in a low-income community of Manhattan, our students are the definition of diverse. Culturally, we house many immigrant families ranging from African to Middle Eastern to Dominican. Personally, we house children of all kinds including those who are athletic, those who are artistic, and those who are logical. Academically it is no different.

When it comes to education, our students enter the classroom at a myriad of levels ranging from far below grade level, to approaching grade level, to on or even above grade level.

This is a difficulty for many of the teachers in our schools as we are constantly questioning how to meet each student where they are and give them the tools they each need, at their own level, to improve.

My Project

For many of us, math class was a call to action. We were presented with a problem and we raced to complete it. However, how empowering would it have been if math wasn't a race? What if you were told it wasn't about the answer as much as how you made sense of the numbers?

Math should be a subject full of thought, discourse, and collaboration.

In fact, research shows that math is learned best when conceptualized in social settings. Unfortunately, as educators, we cannot encourage this type of work without the right resources. These books will serve to provide several grade level teacher teams with lessons, performance tasks, and puzzles that can push our students towards this type of work. As students build routines around group work and problem-solving, they will come to realize that it isn't about being good at math or not. Instead, it's about making sense of situations to solve broader problems at hand.
