It's Never Too Early to Save! Financial Literacy for Kindergarten
My students need books on financial literacy, magnetic money, money puzzles, colored paper, and laminating pouches so that we can create take home financial literacy kits.
The kindergarteners in my classroom come from a wide range of life experiences; some are from very traditional two parent working families, others may be from single parent homes, and some are immigrants from other continents. The one thing that links them is their love of learning! My kindergarteners are full of questions, excitement and enthusiasm! They can't wait to learn and are ready to share their learning with others. Through classroom meetings, social skills lessons, modeling and practice, we have blended into one big classroom family.
Kindergarteners are excited to learn and are happy to support each other in their learning.
They cheer for each other's successes and sympathize when there are struggles. They are learning critical social skills to use as they grow.
My Project
Kindergarten students benefit from hands on activities, the money puzzles will allow practice on adding and identifying money. The magnetic money will be incorporated into our Morning Meetings. The addition of books about money, coins, saving, spending, and financial literacy will be incorporated into our regular school curriculum. Students will be able to better understand that adults must plan how they spend their earnings, and plan for emergencies. The lessons will support our needs vs. wants social studies standards and our math standard to add and subtract fluently through 20.
Students will have a better understanding of money after hands on money activities are incorporated into our daily routine.
Students will learn to manage and budget with our own classroom currency that we create.
