It's Never Too Early to Become an Activist!

Help me give my students books about a young activist who is working hard to change how minority girls feel about themselves.

My Students

I am the librarian at an inner city, K-6 elementary school. Our school is an Expeditionary Learning (EL) school. EL involves rigorous academic work centered on compelling topics that are both interesting and relevant to the students.

We are an exceptionally high performing school and my students just love to read.

My fifth graders are working on an "activism" expedition in library and they are so excited to learn that activism can start at a very young age. They are ready to start!

My Project

I am hoping that this book about a young activist, Marley Dias, makes my students aware of what activism is and how you are never too young to be an activist. Marley started at 10 years old to try to change how young black girls view themselves.

My fifth graders are very vocal and yearn to make changes.

By creating an expedition on activism, it is my hope that my students will explore social justice, volunteerism, equity, inclusion, and social media to define a "problem" that they can define, and then grapple with how they can make a positive change.

If this project is picked up, my students will be able to take this book home to use as a reference for how passion can inspire anyone to make a change for good!
