My students need the Amazon Fires to help them reach their reading goals. The students can read the stories on the Fire or have the stories read to them!
My students are very reluctant to read books. They struggle with reading. Who wants to do something that is hard for them? My students hate books, but they love technology. I am trying to incorporate their love of technology and start a love of reading at the same time.
I work with 30 students in the sixth grade who have disabilities.
The disabilities range from Learning Disabled to Autism to Cognitive Disabilities. I have some students who are close to reading on grade level (4-6) while I have others that are at a first grade reading level. This group of students are super sweet. They are very hard working. They have stated that their goal for this year is to become better readers and understand what they have read! Our school has a 46% rate of free and reduced lunch students. I service most of these students. And I LOVE IT!
My Project
These Amazon Fires will allow my students to download books and read the books on a tablet. They think reading books on the tablet is the coolest thing ever! My students have great listening comprehension, so the books could even be downloaded to read aloud to them! After the students read their books on the Fire, they can then connect to the Internet and take an AR quiz and get points for reading! (Students with the most AR points receive prizes, a limo ride, and a lunch date with other top readers!) The students could take the tablets home and read their books there. Having the book on the tablet will be that technology piece that the students love. Students will learn to have a love of reading!. And if they don't know a word as they are reading, they can stop and look it up on the web! Instant knowledge.
Many of my students do not like to read.
They hate reading to honest. But if we can mix it with technology they won't even know they are reading! They can have books read to the from the tablet and that will help them not only learn new words since they are hearing them and seeing them at the same time, but it takes the stress off of them for having to know every single word. My students will look forward to their reading time with these tablets. I want to enable a love of reading.
