Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember what is like to have some much fun in school that you were disappointed to hear the bell ring signaling class was over? How about being more surprised that you demonstrated learning the material? Students love reviewing when it is a game.

My students are mostly Latino and the majority are the first generation of their family that will attend college.

They are bilingual and very bright. Given they have chosen to participate in an Honors Program, they are highly motivated to succeed. They not only enjoy competing with one another, I encourage them to learn how to compete with their best self. Large classes in a large urban district with lots of transiency means limited access to resources, especially during this difficult economic time. I try to engage these capable young people in as many different ways as possible, including preparing for assessments.

My Project

When students are asked to fill out an evaluation of the course, their two favorite experiences in Biology are dissections and the review games. Who would think students are actively looking for study groups the afternoon before a review day? The students themselves are surprised to be excited preparing for a test. With a review game they discover, reinforce, and demonstrate how much they know. They also discover how much they still need to study. A simple and necessary activity turns out to be a favorite. The extra scoreboards and remotes for the Jeopardy review game will not only provide the means to an end (demonstrating command of the subject material), it will provide a more enriching experience. With additional remotes, the teams will be smaller, ensuring each student will have more opportunities to show what they know.

My students are always so excited on Review Game Day that neighboring classrooms need to be warned that the noise of cheers might be heard through the walls.

I have made do with note cards and the like, but my students would benefit if I could add more technology in the class. It would also eliminate the arguments as to which team "buzzed in" first. The materials will be used a minimum of ten times a year, and are not limited in the number of years our honors program will utilize them.
