Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In our district, secondary schools do not qualify for Title I, but otherwise our school would qualify. I work with some special education students, a population that is transient and often lost in the shuffle. I have students from Mexico, Brazil, Peru, Africa, and other areas of the world. Many students in out schools come from low SES backgrounds and don't have the consistency in their everyday lives as we would like for our students. The end goal of my projects are to encourage, support and car for the whole child while in my classroom.

My Project

Every year our Latinos in Actions students along with our school hosts a Noche Latina. Performers and sister LIA cohorts come together for performances, poetry, dancing and more. This is one of the most anticipated nights of the year for our community, school and students. A night for our Hispanic and Latinx students to celebrate their Latinx heritage. This year our students have been planning and choreographing their dance performances since September. The final number is Carnaval del Barrio where each student will proudly wave their flag and celebrate their country/culture that made them. Along with raising our flag, this project is hoping to provide It's in My DNA shirts representing a thumbprint flag of each student's country. Each shirt will represent each individual student and be worn for the closing number.
