I teach 16-20 year old students at an alternative high school in Chicago. All of my students have dropped out of high school and chosen to return. In the end, the majority of our students graduate and go on to college, the military and other jobs. While we have a lot of heart, we have limited resources and inadequate facilities. My classroom is very small, as the school divided one room into two to create more space. In addition to my room being small, we get very little natural light. In the winter it can even be difficult to see the board. As we are a closed campus, and the students must remain in the building from 8:00-2:30, this lack of natural lighting negatively impacts my students moods as well as vision. This situation is further exacerbated by the fact that we share an electrical system with the room next door. When my colleague needs to turn off the lights to show a video or use her projector, our lights turn off as well. We are constantly deciding whose class needs to see more. It is for these reason that I would like to have two natural light floor lamps (as well as two replacement bulbs) in my classroom. I feel that these lamps will help my students to perform and feel better.
