“It’s Getting Hot In Here….” Prepping For Large Student Labs

My Students
My students are dedicated and curious students who love to learn how to investigate the world around them! Struggling to work with Covid-19, but still wanting the lab experience of a high school science classroom, these students are great!
Using modern technology to help students who merge from in person and online on a day-to-day basis, these upgrades to my classroom help the students transition flawlessly from one circumstance to the next.
My Project
Here in Utah, we have been asked to transition from recited facts about how “The Mitochondria is the Powerhouse of the Cell”, and move to as much Science skills based labs as possible. This allows us a wide window of experiments and hands on application, but also opens the door to having to create large amounts of labs and resource-based activities that must be prepared prior to our short 45 minute classes.
While labs are arguably among the best teachers, they are not quick, cheap, or easy to setup for the students when using old equipment.
Having new and digital tools to help us prepare and maintain solutions for labs can shave up to an hour of prep time everyday we run these labs, which also allows us to prep other parts of the lab or help students while our solutions are prepping.
Generally, the consumable resources for these labs are easy to come by, but the equipment to run them is much more costly. Any help you can provide will go a very long way!!
