This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did you know you are made of elements? You are mostly oxygen, carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen. Help my fifth students discover the amazing facts about our world with "Element" materials. With these materials, my students will research an element of their choice and discover how it relates to the world

We are a 5th grade class in Northern California.

We have 31 students in our class. They are very curious and lively. My students love science. Most of my students have not had many experiences going to science museums, or having hands-on science experience. They have had little to no experience with creating science projects or investigations.

My Project

These materials will help the students get a better understanding of how important elements are. They are the foundation of everything. My students will explore elements in small groups, build elements using Styrofoam balls and toothpicks, research what elements are in our common everyday objects, etc. Using these materials will give the students a better understanding of how the periodic table is organized and structured. In addition to looking at the periodic table, we will be looking at how our bodies and the earth are made up of elements and the important role of these elements. We will then look at minerals to further explore the elements in relationship to the earth. We will conclude this investigation by going on a flytrap to the Lawrence Berkeley Labs BLAZES program- a wonderful hands on science field trip.

Help me inspire my students with creative, fun, engaging science activities and projects.

Help me show my students that science is more than reading a textbook from cover to cover. This will help them developed a better understanding of what science is and how it can be so fascinating and fun! Thus, creating lifelong science learners.
