This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I teach at a small alternative school in New Orleans. My students are predominately African American and are working on getting the last few credits or have sought the school out for an alternative setting. New Orleans is an urban space, and we have been struggling for a long time to do right by all our students. I will help my students here learn to love to read, even though they don't know it, yet. We can practice for tests, but in the long run, I want them to be lifelong readers (and writers).
My Project
I will be working with my students on a variety of reading skills. While technology is not the end-all-be-all, there are some great programs out there to help us. We could use some Chromebooks and an ecologically friendly charging station (of course).
At the end of the day, I love paper, but educators would be remiss if they did not employ technology and teach responsible and effective use while they are at it.
Chromebooks would help me achieve that purpose. I am starting out with a request for just a few, and I hope we can build the resources over time.
