My Project

I teach in a school that is culturally and linguistically diverse. My 2nd graders are kind and inquisitive little human beings who thrive on opportunities to move and express their creativity, emotions, and energy. We are often singing, dancing, and making art as well as working on the core subjects of reading/language arts and math. There is a lot of joy in my classroom!

My students this year are remarkable because they take impromptu moments during the school day to tell me of acts of kindness their classmates do for others.

We have also been exploring what kindness is through read-aloud of picture books by Peter Reynolds (e.g., The Word Collector, and The Dot). These teachable moments got me to thinking--how can my students share these moments with the greater school community, to amplify their creative voices, highlight kindness, and encourage each other?

I would like my class to continue our exploration of kindness through more quality literature, which I will use for read-aloud. We cherish our read-aloud time, and the picture books I am requesting would be perfect for providing more background knowledge and teaching social-emotional learning, not to mention reading comprehension strategies and vocabulary.

Ultimately, I intend to use what we learn from these books to help students create our own class book that illustrates different examples of kindness, as well as augmented reality kindness posters that incorporate digital animation and green screen technology using a STEAM lesson by award-winning art educator Tricia Fuglestad.
