My Students

In the center of our school library is a Suggestion Box. Right now, it's bursting with student requests for Dork Diaries. Our kids are in love with this series. Please help us to put Dork Diaries on our library shelves!

What's the big deal about Dork Diaries?

What kind of kids does it appeal to? Most fans are girls around middle school age. The novels' themes include unpopularity at school, trying to fit in, dealing with student cliques; adapting to a new school; getting used to (and losing) an iPhone; stressing out about schoolwork, cramming for exams. As one of my sixth-grade aides just told me, "Dork Diaries are about issues we can relate to." Our school is a K-8 center. The kids who want Dork Diaries tend to be girls in 4th grade through 8th grade. We are located in a touristy part of South Florida, so you might expect our school to be affluent. You'd be wrong. Our parents don't own the local cafes and hotels. They serve at the tables and make the beds. The school is classified as a Title I school, which means that most of our kids are from low-income households.

My Project

That's why the school library plays such an important role in their education. Our parents don't have the spending power to purchase their kids a lot of books. (Additionally, most of our kids are first-generation Americans. Their parents are unlikely to have English-language reading materials lying around at home.) The school library is very popular with the kids. It is packed before and after school. I don't think it is so difficult to get kids to read. You just have to stock the library with books that the kids will find entertaining and interesting - and that's where that Suggestion Box comes in. When I opened up the box last week, I found that over a third of books requested are from Dork Diaries. Right now, we have half a dozen Dork Diaries books. These are nowhere near enough to satisfy demand; we don't even have all the titles in the series. Hence this project.

How can I have a Suggestion Box in the library if we have no money to get books?

Very simple. This library runs on DonorsChoose.org. Without you guys, we'd be sunk. Donors keep our kids supplied with books. They keep our kids enthusiastic about reading. Thanks to DonorsChoose.org, our kids love the school library. I think that Dork Diaries would be a great addition to the collection - and I know that our students would love to check these books out. Please help us acquire these books!
