Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Recess. A fifth grader's favorite subject. But, how fun is recess when there are no games to play? Where I teach, the cold harsh winters bring the children inside the classroom for recess, and as of now, there's not much fun for them to have.
My students attend a neighborhood public school in a large city in Illinois.
They come from low income families and they are mostly first generation Americans, Spanish being their dominant language. They are often the translators for their parents and the care taker of their younger siblings. Many of the children live with their extended family members, and have become accustomed to sharing everything and having very little space they can call their own.
While the majority of the students were born in the United States, they did not begin to learn English until they began school. English being their second language has required for them to work hard to reach grade level standards in their second language. However, many of the students are significantly behind grade level expectations in the core subject ares.
My Project
With a set of fun and educational games, my students will have the great recess they deserve. The students will be able to play games in small groups, by themselves, or as a large group. The games will be a fun way to reinforce the essential math, reading and language skills they so need. I want school to be a fun place, a place that they look forward to going to every day and games of their own will help this happen.
Please help me provide my students with educational activities they can enjoy during recess.
They need to have a real break in their day to play with their friends. They need this so they can feel a sense of reward to their hard work, and to allow them to be a kid when so much of their life has required for them to grow up too fast.
