This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are superstars! Yes, they are part of a low income neighborhood and their primary language is not English; yet, they have the will of working very hard to be successful in school. Most parents are non-English speakers and work in the fields, but they put their best effort to provide their children with the essentials. Around ninety-five percent of the student population on the school site are English language learners.
More than seventy-five percent of our students are below grade level when it comes to reading, writing, and mathematics, but I can truly say that they are trying their best effort to overcome the language barrier and succeed academically in school.
My Project
This past month has not been easy for certain kids in my classroom. Some of my kids have been sent home to quarantine as they have been exposed or tested positive to COVID-19. As a result, they have been struggling how to deal with stress. Therefore, a strategy that the counselor in our school taught us is to have a self reflection journal to express one’s emotions in writing or by drawing. Therefore, for four of my students who have been struggling with managing their stress, I want to provide them a space to talk about their emotions either one on one or in a group. As a result, I want to provide my students with a journal and a comfortable seat of a pillow, in which as a group we self reflect by using the strategy of writing or drawing. In addition, our circle time will be during lunchtime; therefore, it is essential for my students to have a healthy snack to snack on while engaging in this type of activity to manage stress levels.
